Obama Takes Clear Lead in WashingtonPost/ABC Poll; National Average Shows a Tie

Posting at the Swamp (Chicago Tribune), Mark Silva reports the results of the latest WashingonPost/ABC poll:

“Fears of an economic slide have given Democrat Barack Obama a lift, with polls showing that voters trust Obama more than Republican rival John McCain to handle the economic crisis at hand.

“The newest gauge of this impact of a struggling economy on a close presidential contest is the survey reported today by ABC News and the Washington Post.

“It portrays Obama as gaining a 9-percentage-point advantage over McCain among likely voters surveyed nationally - the first time a pre-election poll by this consortium has found a Democrat drawing more than 50 percent of those surveyed. The margin: Obama 52 percent, McCain 43 percent.”

Keep in mind the latest daily tracking polls continue to show the race between Obama and McCain a dead heat with Gallup giving Obama a lead of +3 points and Rasmussen giving him a lead of +2 points. According to RealClearPolitics, Obama’s national average gives him a lead of only 3.2 points.

Latest Gallup Daily Tracking Poll: Democrats Favor Clinton Over Obama

The Gallup Daily Tracking Poll announced today that Hillary Clinton is maintaining her lead over Barack Obama: the poll shows Clinton with a five percentage point lead over Obama in national Democratic voters' nomination preferences, 48% to 43%.

According to Gallup’s Web site, “This marks the second consecutive day of Gallup Poll Daily tracking showing Clinton with a statistically significant lead over Obama, something she had not accomplished since Feb. 7-9 polling. Clinton's recent momentum has coincided with the controversy created by Obama's association with controversial preacher Rev. Jeremiah Wright."

The latest tracking poll also shows: “Currently, registered voters express a slight preference for John McCain rather than either of the Democrats for the general presidential election. McCain has a 47% to 43% lead over Obama, and holds a 48% to 45% edge over Clinton. Both sets of numbers are unchanged from Wednesday's release. – Jeff Jones.”

Based on polling conducted March 2-4, Gallup’s latest tracking poll shows Hillary Clinton has moved ahead of Barack Obama in national Democratic nomination preferences, 48% to 44%.

Gallup explains:

“The latest three-day average primarily reflects Democratic attitudes before the outcomes of Tuesday night's primaries were known. National Democratic preferences began to shift in Clinton's favor on Sunday, gained momentum on Monday, and remained favorable to her on Tuesday. Any impact her success in Tuesday night's elections may have on national preferences will be reflected in tomorrow's Gallup Poll Daily election tracking report.”

The latest Gallup daily tracking poll shows Hillary Clinton maintaining her national double-digit lead over Barack Obama in the Democratic race with a 51% to 40% advantage. Thursday's three-day rolling average, including Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday is the first that includes any post-Super Tuesday interviewing.
