Stop the anti-wildlife forces!

Donate Now Katalusis friends, I am so grateful to Jamie Rapaport Clark at Defenders of Wildlife for keeping me posted regarding the efforts of the anti-wildlife forces in Congress to harm or destroy the nation's wildlife. I just got this message from Jamie:

Protect Our Wildlife
Gray wolf, (c) Michael Quinton NGS
This Congress, more than 90 bills, riders and amendments have been proposed to undermine the ESA!
Donate Now Button
Dear Virginia,
Can you believe it?
There have been more than 90 legislative measures introduced this Congress to undo decades of wildlife conservation progress and abandon the wildlife we all love.
If these measures pass, wolves will die. Other wildlife will lose protection. And still others will find their habitat plundered and destroyed.
Most recently, anti-wildlife senators in Washington, D.C. have introduced a series of amendments to the Energy Bill that would cripple wolf conservation and set wildlife protection back by decades.
There are four amendments in particular that must be defeated:
    The "open season on wolves" amendment – would delist wolves in Wyoming and the Western Great Lakes. We’ve seen what delisting looks like in Wyoming, where it was open season on wolves every day of the year in 80% of the state before the courts put a stop to it;
    The "let’s give up on Mexican gray wolves" amendment – would delist Mexican gray wolves if the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service determines that minimum survival goals under a deficient, outdated plan from 1982 have been met;
The "leave bats in the dust" amendment – would prevent the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service from protecting the highly imperiled northern long-eared bat as an endangered species under the Endangered Species Act; and
The "forget your day in court" amendment – blocks citizens from going to court to hold the government accountable when it does not properly enforce the ESA. This amendment would bar recovery of legal fees otherwise available under the law and allow local governments to veto a federal court’s decision to enforce the law with regard to certain species.
The anti-wildlife forces have their high paid lobbyists and lawyers. Wildlife have you and me as their voice – we're the premier organization speaking out on behalf of wildlife and wild places.
You and I know that most Americans love their wildlife and want to see it protected. It’s up to you and me to make sure the true voices of Americans are heard on Capitol Hill.
Thank you for all you do.
For the wild,
Jaime Rappaport Clark

Elephants - an endangered species

Yes, Katalusis readers, those awe-inspiring, magnificent creatures - the elephants - are being exterminated by greedy poachers. I'm posting this message from Jamie Rappaport Clark on their behalf:

Help stop elephant extinction in its tracks!

Unless we act now, African and Asian elephants will slide towards extinction.
Donate Now Button
Dear Virginia,
If you love elephants, this will break your heart.
Reports have just come in showing that Tanzania, once the African elephant capital of the world, has lost two-thirds of its elephants to poachers in just four years.
"I had never seen anything like that – there were carcasses everywhere," reported one observer.
Can you imagine a world without elephants? That’s where we’re headed if we don’t act with the greatest possible urgency.
Make a donation of $30 or more, and we’ll send you our brand new "Stop Extinction in Its Tracks" bumper sticker, free. This sticker will show your support and help bring attention to this critically important issue!
You might be surprised to know that the United States is the second largest importer of illegal ivory in the world. The Obama Administration has taken some important steps to block illegal ivory imports and sales. But at the same time, the powerful National Rifle Association (NRA) and its cronies are pressuring in Congress to make it easier to import ivory and other elephant "trophies." It’s almost too shocking to believe.
As Americans, you and I must do our part to end the demand for ivory, stop the importation of illegal blood ivory into the U.S. and aid the elephant nations in their efforts to end the killing.
An elephant is ruthlessly killed for its ivory tusks roughly every 15 minutes. Unless we act now to stop it, both Asian and African elephants will continue to slide towards extinction.
Sincerely,
Jaime Rappaport Clark

P.S. Please put these stickers on your car or bike – we need to wake people to the urgent extinction crisis going on around us!

Tuning in to the cries of the nation's wolf population

Hi Katalusis friends,

I had hip replacement surgery on May 7, 2015 and since then I've been recovering in a transitional care unit at a local nursing home. I've got wi-fi here and cranked up my laptop the other day to maintain this blog and get back in touch with my online community, which includes a number of supporters of our wildlife. By the way, my occupational therapist interrupted my posting here this morning, and I learned that she, too, is a wildlife supporter - a nice coincidence.

So now that I've worked out with dowels and other OT stuff, let's welcome Jamie Rappaport Clark and tune into to the cries of the nation's wolf population:

Congress has introduced a series of bills that would force wolves in seven states off the Endangered Species List!

Dear Virginia,
A war is raging. And the future of America’s wolves could depend on you.
They are dying by the hundreds – shot, trapped, gunned down from helicopters, left to die in snares.
And now – in an effort to pander to anti-government ideologues and wolf-hating extremists – Congress has introduced a series of bills that would force wolves in seven states off the Endangered Species List.
If these bills pass, nearly every wolf in the nation will be at the mercy of the states.
More than 3,300 wolves, including mothers and helpless pups, have been killed since Congress stripped wolves in the Northern Rockies of federal Endangered Species Act protections.
I know you care. And we need you now more than ever.
As a special thank you, with any gift of $20 or more, we’ll send you a wolf beach towel FREE that features the Defenders of Wildlife logo along with a beautiful color image of a wolf.
There have always been wolf-haters. Driven by fear, greed and superstition, they exterminated wolves by the thousands. By the 1950s, wolves in the Lower 48 were all but extinct.
Twenty years ago, Defenders helped reintroduce wolves to the Northern Rockies. New packs were born. As the 21st century dawned, wolves were making an historic comeback.
But now the wolf-haters are fighting back harder than ever – and they’re using Congress to get their way. They’ve declared war on the very wolves we worked so hard to restore.
Donate today, and with your gift of only $20, you’ll receive our wolf beach towel FREE!

Where do 2016 presidential candidates stand on protecting our wildlife?

Take Action

Just got this email, which prompted me to wonder where our leading 2016 presidential candidates stand on protecting our nation's wildlife.  Just asking...
Help Save Red Wolves!
red wolf (captive) (c) B. Crawford/USFWS
Only about 100 wild red wolves survive in the United States!
Take Action
Dear Virginia,
No animal should have to endure this fate.
Red wolves are on the brink of extinction with fewer than 100 animals surviving in a small part of eastern North Carolina. Despite this, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), the agency in charge of ensuring this wolf’s survival, appears to be quietly walking away from their red wolf recovery program, dooming these wolves to extinction in the wild.
After being hunted to the brink of extinction, FWS was entrusted to help save these shy wolves. Yet last year, 10 percent of the red wolf population was killed, and another five percent lay dead so far this year.
What’s worse, key staff vacancies are going unfilled at the FWS Red Wolf Recovery Program, critical field work is being skipped, and most telling of all – there has not been a single red wolf released into the wild in years.
Under pressure from North Carolina special interests, FWS appears to be walking away from this recovery program and all red wolf recovery efforts. You may recall Defenders went to court last year to successfully stop night hunting of coyotes in red wolf habitat. The two animals are strikingly similar in appearance which has led to dozens of “accidental” red wolf shootings.
Defenders will take whatever action is necessary to stop this tragedy.
We’ve simply come too far to give up on these magnificent creatures - there is no excuse for walking away now.
Thanks for all you do.
Sincerely,
Jaime Rappaport Clark

Federal gunmen kill 19 Idaho wolves

It's sickening. Thanks to communications over time with Jamie Rappaport Clark at Defenders of Wildlife and my friend Mary Lundeberg at Nature Connections, I feel a kinship with wolves and other wildlife, and it's nearly as painful to learn of a massacre of wolves as it is to read of the latest ISIS beheadings of members of my own species.

Here's the latest from Jamie:

Dear Virginia,
We’ve just learned that federal gunmen have aerially shot 19 wolves in remote Northern Idaho at the request of the state.

The killings took place on U.S. national forest land in order to artificially boost elk numbers to benefit sport hunters and outfitters.

This is a travesty pure and simple.

Please help us stop the killing with an urgent donation to Defenders of Wildlife.

Defenders will take whatever action is necessary to stop this tragedy.

Defenders is the only national organization with staff on the ground in Idaho who not only worked to help restore wolves, but who are actively working at the statehouse and state wildlife commission to testify against actions threatening wolves.

Are you as angry as I am that the federal government is hiring out its employees to Idaho to kill wolves from the air?

Please help with a generous donation to protect wolves and other vulnerable wildlife!

The federal wildlife kill-for-hire agency, ironically called “Wildlife Services”, has received hundreds of thousands of dollars from Idaho to carry out the state’s relentless wolf killing agenda. That this latest killing took place on federal public lands only compounds the outrage.

And while the federal government spent millions of dollars helping to restore and recover wolves in the Northern Rockies, it is now helping Idaho slaughter wolves to boost elk populations, causing the situation for wolves to grow more dire.

The number of breeding pairs of wolves surviving in the Idaho wild has been plummeting ever since the state was given back control over wolves.  In 2011, there were 40 breeding pairs in the state, but by the end of 2014, estimates projected that number as having declined by 45% to 62%. Based on these plummeting numbers of breeding pairs, the future of Idaho’s wolves is increasingly grim.

If you love wolves as much as I do, you’ll want to do everything possible to protect them from these appalling attacks by federal gunmen.

Your support matters more than ever. Can I count on you to help?
Thanks for standing with us to protect wolves and other imperiled wildlife.
Sincerely,

Saving America's forgotten wolves

Over time, I've begun to consider Defenders of Wildlife CEO Jamie Rappaport Clark a Katalusis writer. She emails me about her latest wildlife concerns, and I'm pleased to post them here. This just in from Jamie:

Dear Virginia,
You and I are almost out of time to avoid a heartbreaking tragedy.

Two different American wolves could become extinct in the wild within the next decade – unless we act now.

Wild populations of red wolves and Mexican gray wolves live 2,000 miles apart but could share a similar tragic fate.

Help us save America’s forgotten wolves, and other imperiled species, with an urgent contribution to Defenders of Wildlife.

Mexican Gray Wolves – Native to the U.S.

Despite their name, Mexican gray wolves are native to both the U.S. and Mexico!

Their fur a mix of gray, rust, black and cream colors, these smaller gray wolves once roamed throughout the southwestern United States. Slaughtered as vermin, they were wiped out in the wild by the 1980s.

In 1998, I personally oversaw the release of eleven Mexican gray wolves from captivity – the first of their kind in the wild for many generations. At last count, there were only 109 in the wildlands of Arizona and New Mexico – these beautiful animals are hanging on by a thread.

With your help, the Defenders team has led the fight for Mexican gray wolf survival. We have helped ranchers coexist with wolves, gone to court to make sure the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) does the right thing, and showed up and spoken up wherever we were needed. Now, the lobos are facing grave new challenges.

Your urgent support will help us keep the pressure on FWS to finally save the lobos!

Red Wolves: A Fatal Resemblance to Coyotes

Even smaller than Mexican gray wolves, red wolves once roamed from Pennsylvania to Florida. Today, fewer than 100 animals survive in a small section of eastern North Carolina.

These slender, rusty gray wolves look a lot like coyotes which share the wolves’ habitat. Cases of mistaken identity may explain why at least 50 of these critically endangered wolves have been gunned down in recent years.

In November, Defenders won a temporary reprieve for red wolves, halting night hunts for coyotes in red wolf territory. But now, FWS is considering giving up on red wolf recovery altogether!

Your contribution will help our all-out mobilization to breathe new life into red wolf recovery efforts.
I know you simply cannot imagine a world without these wolves. It’s a future we can avoid, if we all do our part.

Thanks for all you do!

Big bad people attacking innocent wolves

A 130 pound wolf watches biologists in Yellowstone National Park after being captured and fitted with a radio collar on 1-9-03. Credit: William Campbell, USFWS

Once again I'm not posting about big bad wolves desiring to harm people; instead, I'm posting about big bad people attempting to kill off innocent wolves. Yep. Just got another plea for help from Jamie Rappaport Clark, President of Defenders of Wildlife, on behalf of this particular endangered species.

Jamie writes:

defenders_logo.jpg

Dear
Virginia,
If you love wolves like I think you do, you need to know the truth.

Wolves are in mortal danger and under constant attack in states like Idaho. Twenty years of painstaking progress in reintroducing wolves to the Lower 48 and promoting wolf recovery could come to a tragic end, unless you and I protect them.

Wolves need you, and so do we! Your support for Defenders of Wildlife is the best investment you can make to protect wolves and other vulnerable wildlife!

I’ve never seen such a relentless attack on wolves and wolf conservation as we’re seeing today.

Just last week, members of Congress introduced bills to strip wolves in Wyoming and the Great Lakes region of Endangered Species Act (ESA) protection.

I fear they are just getting started – it could be only a matter of time before legislation is introduced to delist nearly all gray wolves in the Lower 48 and bar protections for other critically imperiled species.

But with your help, we will weather this storm of hatred, ignorance and bloodshed.

Your generous support will give us the critical resources to carry on in this fight.

Thanks to you and other supporters, Defenders led the successful campaign to reintroduce wolves to the Northern Rockies. With your support we’ve gone to court repeatedly, and won, to make sure wolves get the legal defense they deserve. We’re pioneering new, non-lethal strategies for managing wolves and livestock to co-exist in order to protect wolves from being needlessly killed.

And with you at our side, we’ll turn away this latest barrage of hatred and anti-wolf persecution. The future of wolf recovery hangs in the balance.

We can’t do it without you.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for your compassion and generosity.
Sincerely,

Mexican wolves: you are their last chance!

You Are Their
Last Chance

I pause in my holiday preparations this morning to stand up for life in our ecosystem that has no voice in humankind's decisions regarding its welfare. Mexican wolves are among our fellow creatures in danger of extinction; they need your voice, too!

This just in from Defenders of Wildlife:

Dear Virginia,

Three Mexican gray alpha male wolves have been found dead – one a month since September.

At the last official count, there were only 83 wild Mexican gray wolves clinging to survival. Just 83.

Despite this, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) is still trying to move forward with a flawed management proposal they call a first step. We call it a slow walk to extinction.

FWS’ own recovery team scientists have told the agency that Mexican gray wolves will not be safe from extinction unless there are three separate populations that wolves can move between. There need to be at least 750 wolves total, and there must be fewer killings of these rare wolves.

While this proposal offers the remaining wolves a larger area to roam, FWS would make it legal to kill them for multiple reasons (including if officials think they eat too many elk). It would also put arbitrary limits on the population and keep these wolves out of the habitats they desperately need to survive.

FWS has even said they will consider killing wolves if they grow to be “too many” which they defined as being 300 to 325 wolves in the wild!

Time is running out for these wolves. Without the release of new wolves, especially breeding pairs, and the establishment of new populations, Mexican gray wolves will slowly go extinct in the wild.

With so few wild lobos left in the world, they deserve a real chance to recover – not flawed decisions that would amount to a slow and certain death sentence.

You are their last chance. It’s too late for the three dead alpha males, but there are still others we can save.

Thank you for everything you do.

Sincerely,
Eva Sargent, Southwest Program Director

Who gunned down the alpha wolf in WA State?

What's behind the insane killing of vulnerable wildlife? This email from Jamie Rappaport Clark of Defenders of Wildlife just hit my inbox.

Dear Virginia,
Wolf hatred has spread west to Washington State.

Yesterday, we learned that the alpha female of the Teanaway pack was shot and killed, throwing the entire pack’s future into jeopardy. Disturbingly, the killing may have been intentional and a criminal investigation is underway since wolves in Washington State are protected under both state and federal law.

Fear and demonization of wolves is like a virus. Help Defenders stop the wolf hatred from spreading any further.

Defenders of Wildlife and our conservation partners are offering a reward for any information leading to the apprehension and conviction of the wolf’s killer.

There are barely 60 known wolves in the entire state of Washington. With the tragic loss of the alpha female, the fate of the Teanaway pack is now uncertain. This is a major blow to wolf recovery in the Pacific Northwest.

Please support our efforts to protect the Teanaway wolf pack and other vulnerable wildlife.

When you support Defenders, you stand with us to give a voice to vulnerable wildlife like wolves that have no voice of their own. You support expert field staff on the front lines of the battle to protect wolves. You support the best wildlife lawyers in the country. And you support our Washington, DC team who go toe-to-toe with those on Capitol Hill who want to exterminate wolves.

Defenders of Wildlife has been winning life-saving wildlife battles since 1947. But we are only as strong as our supporter base – people like you, who love wildlife and are willing to do their part.

Please support Defenders with a generous donation today.

Thank you for all you do.

I'm a defender of wildlife; how about you?

Dear Katalusis readers, I move that we all join Jamie Rappaport Clark and become defenders of wildlife - we need our wildlife as much as it needs us.

Virginia–

Thanks to supporters like you, a series of blockbuster ads will run in the Idaho Statesman, Idaho's biggest newspaper, starting tomorrow.

Will you help us run more ads? We want to ensure that every one of Idaho's citizens knows the atrocities against wolves being committed in their state.

We need to raise at least $30,000 $45,000 by Monday June 16th to begin running a series of blockbuster ads in the Idaho Statesman, the state’s largest newspaper.

It’s the next stage of our all-out campaign to alert the people of Idaho to the slaughter of wolves being carried out in their state.

Please donate today to help us run this ad and to continue our all-out media campaign in Idaho!

As you know, fanatical wolf haters are pursuing a radical agenda to kill as many wolves as possible. Entire packs have been targeted to be gunned down – including helpless pups not old enough to hunt on their own.

War on wolves ad preview:  Click here to view the full ad!

The wolf haters’ agenda is clear – to wipe out nearly 80 percent of Idaho’s remaining wolves in the next five years.

And they’re doing it with taxpayers’ money.

We know that many Idahoans don’t share this view. Once they know the truth, they will demand an end to the state’s extermination tactics. And that’s why getting the word is out is so critical right now.

As you read this, pro-wolf radio spots are airing across the state. Already, questions are being raised about the state’s radical war on wolves.

But we can’t stop there. We will use every possible means to alert Idaho’s citizens to the crisis in their midst.
Please donate today to help run this ad and to protect wolves and other wildlife that you cherish.

For the wolves,
Jamie Rappaport Clark, Defenders of Wildlife
