Those who saw her recently televised town hall in Laramie, Wyoming are describing a rejuvenated Hillary Clinton as “calm, self-confident, warm, and funny – comfortable in her own skin.” Although her campaign has lowered expectations for today’s caucuses, Clinton supporters are nevertheless hoping for an upset and after a quick review of today’s news coverage of the Democratic race in Cheney/McCain country, that doesn’t seem too farfetched.
Here’s Jason Kosena at the Coloradoan reporting from Cheyenne:
“Hillary Clinton worked a crowd of 2,000 in Wyoming's capitol city Friday afternoon, talking up affordable health-care coverage, a better economy and an end to the war in Iraq.
“Three days after sweeping must-win primaries in Texas and Ohio against Illinois Sen. Barack Obama and one day ahead of the Wyoming caucuses, the New York senator criticized the rock-star momentum Obama has seen in recent weeks during her stump speech.
“‘Tomorrow, Wyoming is going to get a chance to have your voices heard,’ Clinton said during her half-hour appearance before fielding questions from the audience.
“‘If you would prefer solutions over sound bites, if you believe we need to have reality instead of rhetoric from our next president, then I need you to go to the caucuses tomorrow and help me out.’”
Kosena noted that Clinton went from Cheyenne to an event in Casper
Noting that Clinton went from Cheyenne to an event in Casper, Kosena interviewed Wyoming residents who attended her event:
“Fort Collins residents Zac Roeling and Dustin Currie, who attended the Clinton event, said they waited an hour in the hot gymnasium on the Laramie County Community College campus in Cheyenne to hear the former first lady speak.
“‘She is very specific and she knows what she is talking about,’ Roeling said. ‘She doesn't ask you to like how she sounds or how she looks, and I like that.’
“Currie, who is studying psychology at University of Denver, said he was pleased to hear Clinton talk about health-care plans that would include mental health treatment.
“’That is a big deal to me," Currie said. ‘I think it would be great if more insurance companies covered mental health.’
Kosena continued:
“Clinton stumped on universal health-care coverage, promoting her plan that would offer the general public the same health insurance she has.
“’If you're satisfied (with your coverage), that takes care of it," Clinton said. "But if you don't have insurance or you don't have the coverage you need...we're going to open up for you the plan that members of Congress (have).’”
Hillary Clinton's supporters will all be pulling for her as the returns come in this evening.
